Geboren wurde die erste Shelby Cobra mit der Fahrgestellnummer CSX 2000 1962 in einer Garage in Santa Fe Spring in Kalifornien. Shelby passte den neuen 260-Ford-V8 (4,2 Liter Hubraum) in ein modifiziertes britisches AC Ace-Chassis ein. Die Kombination aus großem Motor und kleinem Auto sorgte für überlegene Fahrleistungen. Den 60-Meilen-Sprint schaffte die Cobra in 4,2 Sekunden, die Viertel-Meile wurde in 13,8 Sekunden und maximal 180 km/h absolviert und als Höchstgeschwindigkeit standen 246 km/h auf der Uhr.

Nach jedem Test umlackiert

In den folgenden sieben Monaten wurde CSX 2000 an diverse Automagazine herumgereicht und fuhr dabei hervorragende Kritiken ein. Immer wenn eine Zeitung CSX 2000 ausgetestet hatte, wurde die Cobra in einer neuen Farbe lackiert. So entstand der Eindruck Shelby halte einen ganzen Cobra-Fuhrpark vor. Letztendlich war es aber immer nur CSX 2000, der in der RM Sotheby's Auktion in Monterey/Kalifornien am 19. und 20. August versteigert wird.

CSX 2000 war bis zum Tod von Carroll Shelby im Jahr 2012 in dessen Besitz, zuletzt stand die Ur-Cobra in der Shelby-Ausstellung in Las Vegas. CSX 2000 befindet sich nicht im geschleckten Concours-Zustand, sondern weist reichlich Gebrauchsspuren auf. Shelby verfügte, dass die Ur-Cobra nach seinem Tod zugunsten des Carroll Hall Shelby Trusts verkauft wird. Ein Estimate wurde von Sotheby's nicht genannt. Zuletzt erhielten aber AC Cobra-Modelle zu Preisen von rund einer Millionen Dollar den Zuschlag – und die waren nicht CSX 2000.
