SS1 - Standard Swallow
Coachwork by Swallow Coventry, Grams Swallow
6 cylinder in-line 2.0L
Previously a model name, Jaguar replaced SS as the marque name for obvious reasons in 1945. William Lyons had founded the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool in 1922, branching out into coachbuilding with a Swallow-bodied Austin Seven in 1926. Re-location to Coventry followed and the Swallow range expanded to include models on Morris Cowley, Wolseley Hornet and Standard Sixteen chassis. Marque status arrived in October 1931 with the launch of the SS1, a close-coupled coup. The SS1s Lyons-designed chassis was built by Standard, who also supplied the six-cylinder sidevalve engine and four-speed gearbox. The stylish SS1 went some way towards establishing the pattern for future Jaguars, combining as it did sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification and all at a bargain price. 502 SS1s were completed, of which fewer than 20 are known to survive most of these, like the example offered here, have been converted to tourer coachwork.
Originally registered YY 7364 in the UK, this car, right-hand drive chassis number 135236, is known to have been in Germany in the late 1970s/early 1980s and was acquired by the previous owner in September 1993. The cars restoration had already been commenced by the prior owner and this process has been continued by the previous owner. Completed in 2003. Finished in lavender blue with Bordeaux Connolly hide interior, it is offered with sundry restoration invoices and UK V5 registration document. A rare opportunity to acquire the ultimate ancestor of all subsequent Jaguars and the model that started the legend.
Das Auto stammt aus einer großen Privatsammlung in Deutschland.
